The Mekong River is exceptional, by global standards, for its concentration of sediments, its biodiversity and its fisheries. It features 781 fish species, including 165 migratory species; more than 2.1 million tonnes of fish are harvested each year, which represents about 18% of the world’s freshwater fish yield and makes it the largest inland fishery in the world.
